Healing from Trauma

Many people experience trauma without realizing how it continues to affect their lives. Symptoms such as anxiety, depression, panic attacks, or post-traumatic stress often stem from unresolved experiences. Clients may initially seek therapy for relationship difficulties, work stress, or emotional overwhelm, only to discover that these challenges are connected to earlier life experiences.

Trauma is not limited to major life-threatening events. It can include both "big T" trauma, such as abuse, combat, or serious accidents, and "little t" trauma, such as bullying, emotional neglect, chronic criticism, or other experiences that leave lasting emotional wounds. Both can have a significant impact on how we think, feel, and relate to others.

While many therapies focus on reducing symptoms, my approach also addresses the underlying experiences that contribute to them. By processing unresolved trauma and building effective coping skills, therapy can promote meaningful, lasting healing.

PREPARATION AND TREATMENT

A first step in trauma work is building coping skills to support emotional stability and readiness for deeper processing. This is developed through in-session work and between-session practice.

Creating a safe, supportive therapeutic environment is a priority. Care is taken to avoid overwhelming the client or creating additional distress. Clients are encouraged to move at their own pace and can pause or stop at any time if they feel overwhelmed.

What if I had childhood trauma, but I don’t want to discuss them now?

Talking about trauma can feel overwhelming. In some cases, addressing past experiences can help improve how you manage current stressors, but the decision to do so is always yours. You will never be asked to explore anything you are not ready for.

What if I only have adult trauma?

Recovery may be quicker since there are no deeper issues to address. EMDR or BSP can help you fully process the event alongside talk therapy and coping skills. We will review your needs and choose the best methods together.
